A Year Ago - Retrospective

Some outfits from last February and March. Today I went for a run and noticed that the cherry blossoms are starting to bloom already! It put me in a Spring mindset, so I went back to last year's posts and found some of the outfits I was enjoying a year ago. Last year's weather was colder (it snowed in February), so I wore a lot of layers and sweaters.

This year my hair is shorter and I've grown out my bangs. And I'm a little heavier than I was a year ago, although I'm working on that and should be back to a better place by the end of April. A lot of these outfits still resonate with me. In particular I've been wanting to wear my white jeans soon, and my suede skirt as soon as I fit back into it!

Friday - New Sunset-colored Scarf

I didn't quite capture the colors of my new scarf. I bought it to wear in the spring with my orange skirt. It also has shades of yellow, pink, burgundy and olive green in it. This is a photo of the scarf from Nordstrom.com:

The scarf is polyester; I usually hold out for silk, but in this case the colors were great so I made an exception. It's also HUGE, so I'll need to experiment a bit with how to tie it so it's not overwhelming.

This is a gauzy Vince double-layer dolman-sleeve sweater, Vera Wang Lavender Label snakeskin flats, and Kut from the Kloth skinny corduroy jeans.

Out of absolute bordom I dragged husband to Target so I could see what they had of the Jason Wu line. Eh, not much! But I did pick up, on total impulse, this simple tee shirt dress. The stripes aren't the most flattering, and the colors aren't that great for me, but the dress is comfortable, reasonably well made, reasonably good material, and I liked the neckline and sleeve. It'll do for an easy, casual spring or summer dress. I've paired it here with Via Spiga grey suede platform sandals and a pair of very pale, un-pedicured legs and feet.

I am trying to decide if this would look better with a dark under layer (such as navy) in order to create a column effect with the denim. I wore this to run errands with husband.

Later, I changed into my bike gear and biked to the local bike shop for a repair (bent crank due to falling on the ice a while back). They treated me to a soda and I pet the shop's cats while they fixed my ride up. Afterwards, I rode around a bit. The sun was shining and the temperatures were in the mid-50's. It's so nice to get a whiff of spring after so many the cold and dreary days. My mood was definitely much better because of the weather which I'm sure was true of many Seattlites!

We also decided on a paint color for our bedrooms (we have three and we're painting them all the same color). It's going to be Behr's "Dolphin Fin". The rest of our house is painted a warm cream color, with an accent of dark brown on one wall of the main living space. We kind of have a brown and silver color scheme going on, since the tiles of our kitchen are a rough-hewn silvery color.

This evening we're heading to my cousin's place. We haven't seen them in much too long and we're really looking forward to catching up with them.

Later, I replaced the white under-layer with a navy one. I think it's more flattering (although the photo is not as clear due to the fading light).

OK, it's really hard for me to smile early in the morning (and by early, I mean quarter to 9...I am not an early riser!). I had a meeting with a Designer buyer today so I wanted to look up to date without looking like I was trying too hard or dressing up just for the occasion. Also, rain was forecasted and I haven't worn this dress in a few weeks. So it seemed like a good choice. I think next time I'll just wear this with black skinny jeans. These leggings kept falling down.

I think I've sort of figured out a way to do my hair that I like. I use a regular flat iron to twist the ends under. It creates a little width around my face that I think balances it out. I'm aiming for a style like this:

For now I'm waiting for my bangs to grow out and for the overall length to grow. I'm not certain I'll wear it as long as the lass in the inspiration photo. For the time being I can't wait to get my bangs grown out to the same length as the rest of my hair!

This sweater was an impulse buy! I was reading about how cowl necks are supposedly good on me and was browsing online and saw this one one sale for less than $50...and 100% wool.

I have a commitment to new shopping habits, but I am OK with the occasional unplanned purchase that is less than $50, as long as it fits, is a good color and quality garment.

I wore this to go with my family to visit my dad's parents, who live on the peninsula. We took the ferry from downtown. Most of the snow has melted and there isn't too much slush left, either. It was beautiful and sunny for most of the day today.

I did not go to work today. This is what I put on when I thought I would make it in...but it turned out to be raining ice and snow and the roads were too dangerous. Most of the people in my office also worked from home. Everyone is getting very tired of working from home, I think. I only made it in to the office on Tuesday this week. Hopefully tomorrow will be more normal because I am running out of food!

Today it has been snowing all day. It's really small, icy snowflakes. Both my husband and I stayed home from work - I worked from home. We took a walk at lunch time and it was miserable - the snow blowing into my face and lots of dirty mucky snow in every intersection from the traffic. Gross! I was happy with my new boots, though. When I got home and brushed the snow off they looked just as good as always!

This outfit will be cute with snakeskin ballet flats in the spring. The top is Joie, the flats are Kors by Michael Kors, and the belt is Michael Michael Kors! The skirt I found shopping with my mom on Whidbey Island a few years back.

I recently took a quiz based on a book by David Kibbe's Metamorphosis book from the 80's and it classified me as a "Soft Classic". This is my attempt to express what that look might mean. I intended to tuck the blouse in, however the trousers are too snug at the moment for that.

This top is Mink Pink and the trousers are 3.1 Philip Lim. The booties are Via Spiga.

This silk jumpsuit is Gypsy05 (an LA brand). It looks good with my wide black belt, too. I have not gotten much wear out of this even though I really like it. I think it's because it's a decidedly hot weather and "cocktail" type item. Our summers here in Seattle have been pretty crummy for several years in a row...not to mention I don't really get invited to the kind of events that this jumpsuit would be perfect for!

This skirt really doesn't fit me. You can kind of tell it is sitting too high on my waist and the pleating isn't sitting right because the lining is bunching on the side. I love this print, and was kind of happy that I could even zip the skirt! I would consider wearing this even though it doesn't fit quite right. This entire outfit is Milly. I bought the top at Nordies designer sale and the skirt from Sak's right after the stock market crashed in 2008...it was 80% off but only available in a size 8.

The top I never wear. It cannot be worn very easily under another piece because of the bulk of the ruffle. However, if it's warm enough to go sleeveless it's certainly too warm for a (rather thick) cashmere knit...

My Joie washed silk dolman-sleeve blouse. It has a pretty matte gold and tan suede detail at the neckline. I have worn this with a thin black turtleneck under it for winter. It will be a great piece to have in the summer, as well. It also looks good with boot-cut jeans.

This is my new Adam silk tank.
This will be a useful piece to pair with jackets and keep things dressier than a white ribbed cotton tank would.
The jeans are Joe's, the shoes are Sam Edelman and the cardigan is Halogen.

I bought the jacket from bluefly.com and it's Joie brand. The hosiery I got a nordstrom.com. The booties are Stuart Weitzman. The dress is from Target.

I wore these items (approximately) on Friday. The black slim pants with the elevated black platform makes my legs look longer.

I've been polishing up my 2012 shopping list. I plan to by a lot fewer clothes this year. So far I have pulled the trigger on burgundy skinny jeans and a black leather biker jacket that is coming on Tuesday. Today I ordered this Adam silk tank. I need something more polished than my white ribbed tanks to wear under jackets. I don't have any white layering tops other than my white tanks and one white tee (that has a slight stain on it from rubbing against my blue jeans).

Of the items on my shopping list, this is the most practical. Next month I'm hoping to finally get my metal collar from Danijo! I've been wanting it for a while but it a little expensive.

New Year's Day - Blue Dress, New Year Strategy, Skincare

Did you make it to midnight? We did, but barely! Today we made brunch for ourselves and are spending a relaxing day around the house doing chores and hanging out.

For me, 2012 will be about saving more money and working to polish my home. We need to add/replace some furniture and work on making everything more organized and easy to maintain. I have a couple of clothing items on my wishlist, and once those are fulfilled I plan to spend very little on clothing until next year.

Something else that is exiting for me is a new skincare product that I've start trying. I have dry, acne-prone skin that also gets dark spots. The new product that I'm introducing into my nighttime routine is this Poetry in Lotion production from DermaDoctor:

Other products I already use and like are:

Morning

Cetafil facial cleanser for regular skin (I find that the dry skin version of this cleanser doesn't get my make-up off and leaves my skin feeling a little greasy)
La Roche-Posay Active C serum for dry skin - I use this after washing my face in the morning.
Cetafil facial moisturizer for dry skin - I use this over my serum in the morning and sometimes after my toner at night if my skin isn't too dry.
Jane Iredale's aloe vera mineral makeup - this is little mineral balls suspended in aloe vera. The pump bursts the balls into the aloe vera when dispensing the product. I have found that this makeup does even skin tone but I need a separate concealer for spots. But, it's very natural looking and my skin is less breakout prone since I've switched to it.

Night

Pond's dry skin moisturizer - sometimes a bit overkill for my slightly dry skin, but if I'm having a bout of winter skin I slather this on my face and neck at night and it's usually relieved when I wake up.
Clarisonic brush - I use this at night to make sure all my make-up comes off my face
La Roche-Posay Physiological cleansing liquid - I use this as a toner at night and to remove my eye makeup

I wore this to go downtown for a manicure. We had a party to go to, so I wore an outfit I could easily swap the flats for heels and be party-ready.

I wore my Dries van Noten satin and sequin pumps - my favorite shoes of all time! I got them for less than $150 at the Nordstrom Rack (original price was around $750~800).

After biking home from work, Mike and I decided we felt like going out for dinner. So, I took a shower and got dressed and grabbed a quick outfit snapshot.

The cords are Kut from the Kloth. Top is Gap, scarf is Missoni and booties are Sperry Top-siders (waterproof, which was needed tonight).

I tried on this leather jacket today.

The large fit well and looked good, but it's not quite the classic moto jacket I'm after. It's still very cute and of course one can own multiple leather jackets, but I think it will get marked down. I checked inventory on the item and it's well-stocked, so I think I'll take my chances.

I've found a couple options that might work out like this Levi's jacket on Urban Outfitter's website. I have a couple more places to check, though, before I make a decision.

Ah, the joys of photographs without natural light. This is my new Marc Jacobs blouse. I love the color and decided to dress up for Christmas Eve with the family and wear it. We are spending Christmas with my side of the family (my mom's side, to be precise). The tradition on that side of the family is to open presents on Christmas Eve after dinner. We've gotten in the habit of having delicious seafood chowder. Sadly, my husband is allergic to shellfish...Oh, and my brother's girlfriend in vegan...and my mom can't have dairy any more. Needless to say, we had lots of food choices. One thing my mom's family is hands down the best at is food, though, so everything was fantastic and there was a ton of it!

Merry Christmas, everyone! I hope you are all finding some joy for yourself during these dreary months.

My new bicycle cape. It's rain repellant and has reflective trim and was designed in Seattle (see IvaJean.com)...It has a couple things I'd change about the design but overall I'm very pleased with it and it works really well, especially in the rain.

The weather today is so dark! The sun came out around 1:00 but other than that it's been one of those days where we keep the lights on all day. My family just drew secret Santa names yesterday, so hubby and I are ordering stuffs online for gifts. I SOOO hope nothing goes wrong with the delivery and nothing gets stolen. But I not in the mood to fight the shoppers.

I accidentally left the white balance on tungsten for this shot so it's got a weird cast. I did my best to correct it.

Sweater is J. Crew and very warm. Brooch is vintage (gift from my aunt several Christmas' ago). The pants are old CJ by Cookie Johnson and have weird crotch issues but are so very comfy! Shoes are Sperry Topsiders - waterproof and comfortable. I gave up my old Uggs for these and am very happy with them! They have a low wedge heel and a slimmer foot so even though they are still casual they fit my style a little better.

I almost layered my denim shirt under this. But, I'm kind of over the denim shirt. I'm leaning in a more dressy but simple direction lately. Let's face it; I'm not the cool kid who layers. I always felt a little rumpled in layers. Plus, with my ADD leanings it's hard for me to keep track of too many items of clothing at once. And I don't need that added stress in my life.

Casual Round-up - Winterwear and new boots

Sunday afternoon - brunched with husband and a trip to REI for a wool "neck gator" and some brighter lights for the bicycle.

New booties are Sperry Top-siders and wow, are they ever comfortable! A little difficult to get on and off, though. I am replacing my Ugg booties because I just got tired of them. They were too ugly, even for weekend. Casual and comfortable weekend dressing does not mean you have to put up with ugliness!

The faux suede and shearling vest is Hinge from this year's Nordstrom Anniversary sale. Denim are J. Crew matchstick. Tee is Caslon from Nordies as well. While I typically prefer a thinner knit in a tee (can be dressed up more easily) these tees have a flattering fit and neckline, so I like them for casual-wear. I have one in black in addition to this one and I'd like to get one more in another color.

I wore this to a friend's "tree-trimming" party in the evening. We were a little underdressed but I didn't really feel like dressing up. The cableknit sweater is J. Crew and the corduroy skinnies are from Nordstrom (Blue Essence is the brand).

The fit on these is horrible, but the color is just right for the holidays. If I wear them just out of the dryer they are not too bad, but they stretch badly (I typically do not put pants that have spandex in them in the dryer, but these stretched out so badly on the first wearing it was completely necessary to shrink them up). I guess that's why we pay for quality; these are unlikely to even make it through an entire season before they are replaced! If I had waited for a more quality pair to appear I could have saved my money and had a more lasting garment. When I shopped for these I couldn't find a better quality pair that fit, so I compromised with these and now I'm regretting it because I'm seeing a few pairs available that would probably work much better (Joe's, Rich and Skinny and Hudson brands all fit me, typically. Paige, Seven for All Mankind and Citizens of Humanity do not...not enough leg room).

Worn to work for our un-official holiday and sweater party. Jeffery Campbell boots, J. Crew cashmere v-neck sweater. The brooch is vintage and was a gift from my aunt a couple holidays ago. Silver and black skinny headbands were from Nordies last year.

I felt like wearing trousers. I very rarely wear trousers, especially plain black ones. I've been feeling kind of minimalist lately. I liked the shape of this slightly boxy lace top with the width of the trousers.

Bicycling and Clothing

I have been commuting by bicycle to work 3-4 times per week lately. It's about 5.75 miles one way from West Seattle where I live to downtown where I work. As the weather become colder, wetter and darker I've had to adapt my commuting-wear choices.

I had this poncho for rain wear and it was working out pretty good. I was well ventilated and could layer up or down under it. The only thing I didn't like was that it would blow up in the wind a lot.

One day after riding to work in a downpour I wore it up to the showers and hung it to drip dry on a hook. I decided against leaving it in the bike cage because I didn't want someone to steal it. The bike cage is out in the open in the parking garage of my building. Unfortunately, I forgot to grab it as I was leaving the showers and someone stole it from the locker room. It was pretty expensive ($80), and I had it only for a couple of weeks...plus it matched my bike and I thought it was the perfect stylish biking rain gear. Most of the rain gear I see on my commute looks like the person is about to climb Mount Everest or compete in the Olympics.

It is not scheduled to rain for another week in Seattle, so I have a little time to decide whether to purchase another one of these Marimekko ponchos or find something else. I would like something that won't blow up in the wind (it's often windy as well as rainy along the waterfront where I bike).

I've found this cape from Seattle-based biker/designer/marketeer Ann Deotte. The woman seems to have begun as a biking blogger after giving up her car, and then gone on to design this cape which she is now selling. The thing is ridiculously priced at $240, but a discount code gets me $40 off through tomorrow. I have hopes that this will be even more stylish and practical rain gear for bike commuting. The up sides of this cape are that it can be drawn closer to the body with drawstrings so it won't blow up and it is designed to cover the hands (and hence legs) while in use. It also has reflective piping which my old cape did not have.

Now I've got to get myself a new, stylish helmut and some more pratical gloves. My current helmet is a hand-me-down from my mom and is one of those things that looks like you're wearing a spaceship on your head. The gloves I wear are leather lined in thinsulate and when they are wet they not only get very cold but the water causes the black leather dye to stain my hands.

For a helmut I want to go with Bern, with the additional knit liner to keep my ears toasty:

I haven't quite figured out the gloves. I need something light weight but with a little big of wamrth and windproof. I would also love to find some rain-repelling goggles because sometimes the wind causes my eyes to water and makes it hard to see. This is particularly annoying at night in the dark!

Here are some things I've found useful for Seattle Winter riding:

Tall Rubber Boots. After riding through a couple of rainstorms in my Naot white leather sneakers I got wise and switched to my rain boots. They keep my legs dry and clean.

Thermal Leggings (aka "running tights"). I had these from last year when I was training for a half marathon in early spring. They are fleecy on the inside and I like that they can almost pass for regular black leggings when worn under a skirt (I commute in my old running skirt). The down side is they don't stay warm when they are VERY wet; something I discovered when I used them to snowshoe.

Wool Socks. The rain boots are good at keeping out the wind, but not so good and keeping in the warm. Wool socks are a must (the thicker the better) for keeping my toes warm.

For top layers I add a long sleeve shirt in a technical fabric, a half-zip fleece in a pretty berry color. I wear a Lululemon windbreaker when it's not raining to keep the breeze from cutting through my knits.

I've read a lot about people bike commuting in their regular work clothes. I'd love to do this, because changing clothes at work is a pain, not to mention lugging my workwear and cosmetics. However, I do get pretty sweaty on my commute. I do not shower, because I am not dripping in sweat or stinky, but I am sweaty enough that a change of clothes and a wipe down of the upper body and face is welcome (not to mention re-application of deodorant and a spritz of perfume). I also think that my outfit choices would be limited beyond what would be acceptable in my position at work. Some people may be comfortable wearing skinny, stretchy pants and knits every day but that fits neither my style nor my work.

Sometimes I wonder if I am smelly at work. I'm not sure my co-workers would tell me...It could be that my paranoia is a reflection of the American attitude about hygiene; I think we are overly-obsessive compared to other countries. I wonder how much this obsession contributes to the obesity epidemic because we are afraid to do any physical activity that could cause us to perspire without a full shower and shampoo immediately after. Therefore we isolate our physical activity to a section of our lives, rather than burning calories throughout the day by incorporating activity into our entire day.

I wore my 3.1 Philip Lim wrap dress with flat Frye oxfords today. I needed to walk a bit so heels were out.

I do realize that not everyone appreciates this loose caftan-like silhouette. I thought this dress was exciting; the sleeves, the chiffon fabric, the print, the colors and the asymmetrical length (aka mullet dress). But because it is very loose, which isn't necessarily flattering in a traditional kind of sense. I like that the front hits above the knee because it might verge into frumpiness if it were below the knee (particularly if it were all one length). I plan to wear this with these new chunky-heeled booties (Boutique 9 from Nordie's half yearly sale) or with my tall heeled slouchy black booties. I could probably wear this with my tall flat boots as well.

This tank, which needs the straps taken up a bit, is Helmut Lang. I like to wear it in the summer with a white ribbed tank layered under it and white denim...but we had such a short summer this year I didn't get to. I was going through my closet today and purging a couple of things and came across it. I really love the abstract wing print and the colors.

Saturday - Biking in Style for a PUBLIC bike

I got motivated to take pictures on my bike (well, husband took them) because there is a contest for a PUBLIC bike giveaway over on youlookfab.com. It's for a C7 or V7 model. This would be fewer gears than I have, but it would likely be more light-weight and more stylish! I would have to make sure that my new bike still had the things I love about my current bike...wide, sturdy, metal-studded pedals, wide, thick-walled tires and a wide but firm saddle.

If I don't win the new bike I may invest in snazzing up this one with new grips and fenders, and a new helmet.

I wore this out for a nice brunch with hubby.

This outfit is OK - favorite Vince sweater...but I don't like the boots with it. Again, the color families just don't work to my eye. The bots are too warm-toned.

Philip Lim's fall collection was inspired by "girls who ride bikes". I thought that was cool and fitting, since I've been riding mine a lot lately and plan to ride even more throughout this fall and winter. The outfits have a sporty, boyish bent. The simplicity but unconventionality of the looks appeal to me. I also like the colors - rust, navy, blue, green, black and grey - and the materials - leather and cozy knits - as inspirations for fall.

This is my 80's look; mushroom lace top, distressed denim jacket and studded ballet flats (barely visible...) with black skinny jeans. I biked to work Friday and had a big presentation over lunch. After the presentation I went out with my bosses for happy hour, so this is a pic from the ladies room of the restaurant we went to. You can see my bright pink biking jacket on the counter.

Todays outfit - I took this last night and set my white balance incorrectly. I tried to fix it put this was the best I could do! I'm wearing a sequin bow brooch, cardigan and full skirt in homage to the "New Look" of the 1950's

This was Monday's outfit. For this outfit I am wearing a longer, belted jacket, lady-like blouse and round-toe pumps with my vintage cloche hat. This outfit was inspired by fashions from the 30's and 40's.

These long, slim tweed shorts were a purchase from Uniqlo in SoHo. They are a tiny bit too fitted but they are passable. The boots are weatherproof Aquatalia. While I shudder to think of the chemicals they must use on such an item I was very happy to have dry feet during the torrential downpour on my lunch break today.

This is my new Helene Berman cape. I waited in vain for it to go on sale and when I saw that inventory was getting low I used a coupon and pulled the trigger. It did eventually go on sale, but only in the camel color.

These boots were a late-season Nordstrom Rack purchase last year. They are Via Spiga.

I got my long midi skirt hemmed to long midi length. It just seemed more practical for Fall and all the rain. This denim shirt just refused to stay tucked. Well, here they are; the debut of my fabulous new large dot hose. The issue? I paid too much AND managed to snag them on the very first wear. I'm kind of sick about it. I love these tights. I had big plans. *sigh* I hate Mondays!

It was Fall in Earnest today. It didn't break 65 and poured all day. I wore my rain boots and didn't even walk home in the sunshine (which is what usually happens when I wear my rain boots to work in the morning). This morning it was raining so hard that the drops were making little bubbles in the mud puddles in our alley.

Weekend Edition - Biking and Faux Fur

On Saturday my husband had a continuing education class, so I was home most of the day alone. I took the opportunity to go for a long bike ride. I got these biking capris last weekend (they are lightly padded and not thick enough to wear on their own anyway). I've just recently begun to bike more. I don't have my own car, so biking is a good way for me to get around and often it's quicker than walking and sometimes even quicker than the bus! Also, I am still having trouble with my feet. They were getting a little better after taking a break from running almost all summer, but with all the walking in NYC we did at the end of August (and I wore my Naots and Birks exclusively!) they've been bad again. Biking allows me to get my cardio on without exacerbating my foot condition.

It was sunny and warm so I rode to Alki beach and back, which is about 5 miles from our house (and involves climbing a long hill on the way back...but that is Seattle for you!). Last weekend my husband and I rode our bikes all the way to King Street in SoDo. There is a bike path almost the entire way. Eventually, when I figure out the best route through downtown, I plan to start commuting by bike several times a week as a way to stay in shape (plus, it's fun! and, you don't have to wait for a bus...). I don't relish the idea of packing all my stuff and showering and dressing at work - what will happen to my blog! - but I'm sure I can figure something out.

On Sunday, in between my husband's studying (he is taking interior design courses besides his regular work), we took a break for lunch. It was raining hard and in the low 60's. But by the time we had eaten the sky was clearing.

When we got back from lunch we decided to take a bike ride before he had to get back to his CAD project. We took a short (30 minute) ride down to a park by our house and back. By then the sky was sunny but it had turned blustery and cool with lots of leaves are on the ground. It's feeling very fall-like. I wish I could have gone further (we only when about 6 miles total) but my bum was sore and my legs were a little tired from the previous day. The hill back from the park is not nearly as steep as the one back from the beach, but I've not been getting very much exercise lately so I'm a little out of shape!

I've also been at work on my Wardrober program. I am writing it in Visual FoxPro because it's the only programming language I know (I am NOT a techie by any means). It's actually been super fun to have a little project. I'm almost done writing the data entry screens for entering in all my clothes, and I've also started on the logic for combining clothes together into outfits. I plan to just have it put together ALL combinations possible of tops, bottoms, layers, etc. and then use data mining techniques to cull through the combinations for the best ones (based on my favorite outfits I've already worn, which I have captured via tags from my blog). I may have some amount of trouble with the data mining part because my table structure isn't exactly like the type of structure that I learned the technique on (I learned using a program called WEKA). But I will tackle that challenge once I've laid the foundations for "outfit logic" and done the data entry for my clothing items. In the mean time I can at least use my own human brain to identify good combinations...or crazy ones! Hehe...It will be interesting to see what the computer comes up with.

If anyone out there knows stuff about data mining and wants to help me with my silly little project I would love the hear from you!
